If the visitor to Münster walks under the arches from the Lamberti church towards Kiepenkerl, he will inevitably pass the butter shop “Butterhandlung Holstein“, and on entering the shop will inevitably realise that the name “butter shop“, as the founders originally called it, is not enough to describe what the customer can expect. This delicatessen is unsurpassed – not only in Münster. The motto of the Helmrich family, who are the second-generation owners of the shop, which was founded in 1928, is: “As a deli you do not have to have the cheapest salmon, but you must have the best.“ This applies to all the other products on offer in the shop, such as excellent cheeses, assorted cold meats, various hams and delicious salads.

But let us not forget the wine cellar, where customers can select from approximately 200 wines – the focus being on German Riesling – but also superb French and Italian wines, and also the unique oyster cellar, where customers can buy various types of oyster and where, if they so wish, they can enjoy them in stylish surroundings.

However, the proprietor does not want to cater for the well-to-do customer alone, he offers good quality for every pocket. Mr. Helmrich often collaborates successfully with Slow-Food.

Anyone who has already worked up an appetite can also visit the little bistro which was opened in 1998 next to the delicatessen. So, next time you go for a walk through Münster: remember the path under the arches. It is always worthwhile going there after a walk through Münster’s botanical garden!
