Box Hill is a famous Surrey landmark and an outstanding area of woodland and chalk downland, long known as a destination for day-trippers from London. John Evelyn, the 17th century diarist, described walks on the hill. It is surprisingly extensive and with much to offer the rambler and naturalist. There are many beautiful walks and spectacular views towards the South Downs. The Box Hill Estate has belonged to the National Trust since 1914. On the summit there is an information centre, shop and a fort dating from the 1890s.
