Through gaps in the walls sunlight floods the room and a narrow runway leads over historical groundwork. Kolumba is the art museum of the archdiocese of Cologne. The architecture of this museum, which opened in 2007, is the first thing to catch the eye. The Swiss star architect Peter Zumthor erected this outstanding building on the fundament of the church St. Kolumba, which was destroyed in the Second World War, taking great care with the debris of the former church as well as that of the Madonnna chapel. The collection and the temporary exhibitions are just as spectacular. Two thousand years of occidental culture can be admired with works from late antiquity, over medieval paintings and sculptures, to contemporary art (for example with works from Joseph Beuys, Antoni Tapies, Roni Horn, or Louise Bourgeois).
